Native Instruments is a company that specializes in digital audio. They introduced a multichannel audio format which allows you to mix up to five separate stereo channels. The stem is a track and the tool that lets you create and modify them so they can be used as separate tracks in your DAW/wave editor.

Audio processed separately

Working with stems has the advantage that each can be individually processed. This allows producers and DJs to take elements out of a song, or to apply effects to one line. They are stored in MP4 format so that any player compatible can read them.
